All About Vertical Lip Labrets

If you’re thinking about getting vertical labret piercing jewellery, it’s important to consider your lip anatomy. Having enough lip tissue is crucial for a stable piercing. Ideally, fuller lips offer more options for this type of piercing, but even if your lips are somewhat thin, a skilled and experienced piercer can sometimes make it work.

However, not all thin lips are suitable for a vertical labret. There are cases where lips are too thin to support the piercing safely. An experienced piercer will be able to assess your lip anatomy accurately and advise you on whether a vertical labret piercing is a good fit for you.

Getting a Vertical Lip Piercing

The vertical labret piercing is a cool style where a needle goes through your bottom lip in two places. Picture it like this: the needle goes straight down through your lip and comes out below it. Now, some people say it hurts a bit more than other piercings, but hey, everyone’s pain tolerance is different!

This piercing is done on the outside of your mouth, making it more visible than other mouth piercings. It’s like a little accessory for your lip! But, it’s super important that the person doing it keeps everything super clean to avoid any infections.

Here’s a breakdown of how it usually goes down:

  1. Your piercer starts by cleaning your lower lip with water and a germ-killing solution.
  2. You get to rinse your mouth with a special mouthwash to make sure it’s squeaky clean and free from any nasty germs.
  3. The piercer marks the inside and outside of your lip where they’re going to do the piercing.
  4. To get a better look, they use a tool to hold your lip steady and gently pull it out.
  5. Now, here comes the needle part, it goes through the marked spots pretty fast but in a gentle way to make it less ouchie.
  6. Once the needle’s done its thing, it comes out slowly.
  7. Your piercer adds the cool stuff, like a bent barbell (that’s like a funky earring for your lip) and maybe some beads to keep it all in place.

Vertical labret pain

People feel pain differently, and not everyone finds the vertical lip piercing jewellery super painful. Some say it’s like a 4 on a pain scale from 1 to 10.

Here’s why it might hurt a bit more than, say, getting your ear or nose pierced: The skin around your mouth is sensitive, and there are lots of nerves there. Plus, this piercing goes through thin, delicate lip tissues, not just the skin and inside of your mouth like regular lip piercings. So, it can be a tad more intense in the feels department.

Healing from vertical labret piercing

Vertical lip piercings take about 6 to 8 weeks to heal, but it might be shorter or longer based on how well you take care of it. During the first few weeks, make sure to wash your hands with clean water and unscented soap before touching the piercing. Clean your mouth regularly with antiseptic, nonalcohol mouthwash in the morning, before bed, and after meals.

Avoid putting the piercing in water, skip swimming, and choose showers over baths. Keep your clothes and anything that touches your face clean to prevent bacteria. Try not to touch your mouth or face unless your hands are clean, even though this can be a bit tricky.

For at least 5 minutes a day, soak the piercing with 1/8 cup of sea salt dissolved in 1 cup of warm water, and pat it dry with a clean towel. Using a saline spray on the piercing is also a good option to keep it clean instead of the salt soak.

Who Shouldn’t Get a Vertical Lip Piercing?

Not everyone should get a vertical lip piercing. It’s not recommended for people who are pregnant, have a weak immune system, tend to get keloid scars, have infectious dermatitis or atopic dermatitis (eczema), experience welts on their skin from pressure (dermographism), or play sports.

If you’re thinking about getting a lip piercing, it’s important to talk to a professional piercer. They can help you understand the whole process and whether it’s right for you.
